The Mentor Exempted Village Board of Education voted 5-0 on Jan. 14, 2025, to adjourn into an executive session to discuss economic development assistance and related confidential information, then reconvened and adjourned the special meeting at 6:03 p.m.
Board members said the executive session was requested under Ohio law to consider confidential details connected to a potential economic development project. "Pursuant to Revised Code 121.22, I move that the Board adjourn to executive session for the purpose of considering confidential information related to the marketing plan, specific business strategy, production techniques, trade secrets, or personal financial statements of an applicant for economic development assistance, or negotiations between the school district and other political subdivisions respecting requests for economic development assistance, as provided in Revised Code 5709.73 to Revised Code 5709.75," a board member said during the meeting.
The board identified Ohio Revised Code sections 121.22 and 3313.15 during the meeting. The motion stated the information to be discussed was directly related to a request for economic development assistance under Ohio law or to public infrastructure improvements or utility extensions tied to an economic development project. A unanimous vote was required under the cited law before the board could enter the closed session; the roll call recorded five "yes" votes and no dissent.
After the executive session the board returned to open session, moved to adjourn the meeting and recorded a second unanimous vote. Meeting minutes show the special meeting was adjourned at 6:03 p.m.
No substantive public details about the prospective project, the applicant, or any financial terms were discussed on the public record during this session. The transcript records only the board's procedural motions, roll-call votes and the statutory grounds cited for the closed session.
