Council approves contingency street closures for downtown run; organizers to notify registrants 48 hours before event

The Sanford City Council on Tuesday approved a resolution authorizing temporary closure of several downtown streets as a rain-date option for the First Health Run and Fitness Fest.
City staff described the request as a contingency: the event is scheduled for Jan. 11, and organizers are seeking Jan. 25 as an alternate date in case of inclement weather. Kelly Laudati, identified by staff as executive director of Downtown Sanford Incorporated, was present to answer questions.
When asked how the city would notify the public if the date changed, Laudati said organizers would "make a call first thing, which is 48 hours out on Thursday morning from the race. It will be announced via email to our registrants as well as on social media for those that may want to register at the last minute." She added that as of the meeting about 200 people had registered and approximately a dozen were waiting to decide based on weather.
One council member expressed concern that some affected downtown businesses had not been contacted before the council meeting. City staff said they would ensure those businesses are notified earlier in future matters; staff acknowledged some business contacts occurred only after the prior meeting and said they would improve advance notification.
Councilman Taylor moved the motion to approve the resolution; a second was recorded. The council approved the contingency street-closure resolution by voice vote.
Staff said all logistics, times and event details would remain unchanged and that the alternate date would only be used in case of unsafe travel conditions due to inclement weather.
