Council updates boards-and-commissions application questions; Arts Commission proposes a public-art question

The Sunnyvale City Council reviewed and approved updated application questions for boards and commissions at its Jan. 14 meeting, adopting a new supplemental question proposed by the Arts Commission and confirming an annual review cadence.
City Clerk David Carnahan summarized the background: the boards-and-commissions application was reviewed at a Nov. 2024 joint study session and the subcommittee on boards and commissions recommended a standing annual review during the first quarter. The Arts Commission proposed a supplemental question reading, in substance, "What role do you think public art plays in the community? As an Arts Commissioner, how would you prioritize and include visual and performing arts to embody the cultures of our diverse community?"
Agnes Faeth, chair of the Arts Commission, presented the motion on behalf of the commission and noted the commission’s expanded role in public-art selection and programming. Councilmember Vijay Mellinger moved to adopt the Arts Commission’s supplemental question and to accept the broader set of proposed, commission-specific question updates put forward at the meeting; Vice Mayor Linda Sell seconded. The motion carried 6-0 with Councilmember Cisneros absent.
Councilmembers requested staff refine the demographic section of the application in consultation with the Equity, Access and Inclusion manager and discussed converting the application form from a large fillable PDF to the city’s Formstack online form to improve accessibility and reduce empty fields in packets.
