Sunnyvale council recognizes 2024 Santa Clara Valley Science and Engineering Fair winners

The Sunnyvale City Council recognized students who placed in the 2024 Santa Clara Valley Science and Engineering Fair Association awards during the council’s special order of the day on Jan. 14.
The awards ceremony, introduced by Mayor Larry Klein, honored dozens of middle- and high-school students who entered independent science and engineering projects ranging from machine learning on EEG data, wildfire-detection drones and robotic assistive devices to novel construction materials. Council members and Vice Mayor Linda Sell presented certificates and invited winners forward for photos.
SCVSEFA’s annual fair, the synopsis challenge, draws students from across the Santa Clara Valley and, as Mayor Klein said during the presentation, “draws participants from around up to a 1,000 middle and high school students from Santa Clara Valley.” The mayor emphasized the fair’s role in encouraging student research in computer science, environmental science, medicine and other STEM fields and thanked parents, coaches and teachers for their support.
Presentations during the ceremony listed project titles and winners; examples announced at the meeting included a device for generating electricity from rain using piezo and hydroelectric mechanisms, a robot that uses computer vision to pick up trash in parks, machine-learning models applied to EEG data for ADHD diagnosis, and a drone-based system to detect wildfires.
Council members praised the students’ work and encouraged continued engagement in STEM activities. The council recessed briefly after the presentation and returned for the regular meeting later that evening.
Ending: Certificates were distributed and group and individual photos were offered; absent award winners will have certificates delivered later, the mayor said.
