Board adopts 2025–26 Speedway High School course description guide as state finalizes new diploma rules

The Board of Trustees of the School Town of Speedway on Jan. 14 approved the 2025–26 Speedway High School course description guide and authorized staff to make minor, routine edits as state guidance is finalized.
The vote follows a presentation from a district curriculum presenter on planned updates to align course descriptions with the Indiana Department of Education’s (IDOE) forthcoming definitions for the state’s Rethinking High School diploma, which takes effect for the class entering in fall 2025 (the Class of 2029). Board members voted 5–0 to adopt the guide with the caveat that staff return to the board if major, nonroutine changes are required.
The presenter told the board that many course descriptions in the guide are highlighted to show changes and that descriptions will be revised to match the IDOE’s 2025–26 high school course titles and descriptions when the state finalizes them. The district removed a mechanical drafting dual-credit listing after confirming it was not available through Ivy Tech and removed courses not currently offered. The guide also renames “English language learner” references to “multilingual learner” and adds the state’s comparison of Core 40 to the new diploma and the requirements for readiness seals.
Board members praised district staff for preparing the guide and for their attention to maintaining the school’s academic standards while implementing state changes. The board indicated the district will announce an 8th-grade parent meeting for incoming families once the IDOE releases final guidance; the presenter said some IDOE resources would start appearing in February with additional releases through March.
The board’s approval covers the guide as authored and permits routine editorial updates; any substantial or “really wild” changes would require returning to the board for approval. The motion to adopt passed unanimously.
The guide’s adoption applies to course descriptions for the 2025–26 school year; current freshmen, sophomores and juniors remain under the previous diploma rules but may opt into the new diploma pathway if eligible.
