The board unanimously approved Ordinance 2024-42 on Jan. 14, rezoning 13.42 acres at the southwest corner of Franklin Road and Mac Hatcher Memorial Parkway from a state residential district to Civic Institutional.
Alderman Baggett and Alderman Brown both described the action as part of a longer preservation effort along that intersection. Baggett said the change represented a partial preservation success for the broader corner—one side of the intersection had been preserved earlier—and expressed confidence that work in the historic overlay and the Historic Zoning Commission would lead to an appropriate final design.
The ordinance passed without opposition; staff said the property is currently zoned PD and has no active development applications. A public hearing on a related item will be held Jan. 28, 2025, where additional public input can be offered.
