District reports about $24,000 in monthly donations, student art and Raleigh Preschool 5-star rating

Superintendent Sheldahl read a list of community donations totaling $23,968.71 for the month and said the year-to-date donation total is $84,695.13. Donors included Yuma Dentistry for Kids (checks to multiple schools), a $9,005.18 line of credit from a retailer for OC Johnson to buy books, instrument and equipment donations, and multiple DonorsChoose grants to several schools.
School leaders also displayed student art from Castle Middle School and described the student work as using "neurographic art," a technique derived from the work of Russian psychologist Pavel Piskarev, which staff said the students enjoyed and that supports creative skill-building.
Administration recognized James B. Raleigh Preschool for earning a 5-star Quality First rating, the district's highest preschool rating.
On finance, district staff presented a midyear budget overview. Finance staff said about 41% of the fiscal-year budget had been encumbered or spent through December. The presenter noted that the maintenance-and-operations ending-balance includes a buffer and that the unencumbered portion is expected to finish slightly higher unless significant changes occur. The presenter described the unencumbered amount as a multi-million-dollar buffer to maintain operations through the year.
