Monroe students raise $1,520 for Red Cross with student-led talent show

Two Monroe High School students told the board on Jan. 13 that a student-led talent show organized by the environmental club raised $1,520 to support Red Cross hurricane relief efforts.
Chloe Dykes, who described herself as the idea’s originator, told the board she organized the talent show because of news coverage of Hurricane Helene and an approaching storm. Dykes said she worked with teacher advisors — whom she named during the meeting as Mr. Prohaska and Mr. Berhaska in discussion — and the environmental club to plan a two-day event (one performance day for each lunch period). The students set ticket prices, chose judges and scheduled acts.
“After the talent show, that lasted 2 days... we ended up raising $1,520 to be able to donate. All of it went to supporting… the Red Cross,” Dykes said. Club president Addison Thornton and club advisor comments confirmed the event was student-led; the board praised the students’ initiative.
Board members and Superintendent Buskirk commended the students. Buskirk called the event “a great cause” and praised the student leadership and organizational skills demonstrated. The board said the district would follow up with the students about future events and encouraged continued student engagement.
No formal board action was required.
