Johnson County Council meeting roundup: leadership elections, appointments and budget votes
Summary
At its Jan. 13 meeting the Johnson County Council elected leadership for 2025, approved several appointments and a set of routine and budget items. The council also allocated opioid-restricted funds to local programs and approved a set of salary and title updates requested by county offices.
Pam Burton was elected council president and Michelle Graves was elected vice president in roll-call votes at the council's Jan. 13 meeting.
The council confirmed multiple appointments and routine items, including the Edinburgh Town appointment of John Myers and the appointment of Michael (Mike) Hoffman to the Board of Zoning Appeals. The council approved the consent agenda, which covered routine salary-ordinance amendments, transfers and other housekeeping items.
Councilors also approved an allocation of opioid-restricted settlement funds in the first round of grants: awards listed by the council included local programs for prevention and recovery (examples announced at the meeting included grants to Infant Bloom, RISE Recovery Coalition, Upstream Prevention and Riley Children's Hospital). Councilors said recipients will be required to report back on use of funds.
The council approved sheriff office title changes and temporary funding arrangements, accepted an Amity Fire Protection District appropriation request to purchase new self-contained breathing apparatus (air packs), and heard a standing update from the Johnson County Public Library on 2024 activity and an upcoming White River branch feasibility study.
A series of personnel and salary-ordinance requests from county offices and the prosecutor were presented and approved or routed for budget-time consideration as appropriate during the meeting. The council also handled a multi-step treasurer appropriation matter (see separate article on the treasurer reallocation and revote).
