Crest Middle principal outlines 'Distinguished Dragons' program; students recognized quarterly

Katie Barbee, principal of Crest Middle School, presented the Distinguished Dragons Achievement Program to the Cleveland County Board of Education at the Jan. 13 meeting, describing criteria, incentives and early results.
"The Distinguished Dragons Achievement Program was created to recognize and celebrate our students' exceptional academic achievements while also reinforcing their positive behavior at school," Principal Katie Barbee told the board. The program recognizes students every nine weeks based on criteria that include an A or A–B average and consistent positive behavior.
Barbee described two recognition tiers: gold card holders (A average in all classes plus excellent behavior) and silver card holders (A–B average and excellent behavior). Incentives include free admission to athletic events, lunch with a friend and free concession items. The school holds quarterly academic achievement celebrations where honor-roll certificates and cards are distributed.
Barbee said the program also includes monthly student meetings focused on the program’s three core values — excellence and achievement, leadership and service — and cited a December service project in which students collected more than 700 canned food items for a local church food pantry.
Board members thanked Barbee and asked no substantive policy questions; the board later recessed to other agenda items. The district will continue to highlight school-level programs at future meetings as requested by board members.
