Crest High JROTC cadets present unit inspection mission, goals and community service

Cadets from Crest High School’s Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps unit NC-942 presented their unit inspection mission and goals to the Cleveland County Board of Education on Jan. 13, describing academic targets, fitness goals and community-service activities.
Master Sergeant John Davis, aerospace science instructor at Crest High School, introduced the cadet team and said the presentation was prepared as a mission brief for an upcoming unit inspection. "We have our big unit inspection next month," Master Sergeant Davis said, and the presentation was intended to solicit feedback and practice public speaking.
Cadet Colonel Bradley Humphreys, group commander, described the unit structure and reported a unit strength of 35 cadets assigned across three flights. Humphreys said the unit’s academic target is for 100% of cadets to average 80% or higher in RFDC with final reporting set for May 23, and a fitness goal that 50% of cadets improve their fitness-assessment score between the fall and spring assessments. "The fall assessment scores: 31 out of 35 improved," Humphreys said, noting the unit’s positive trend.
Operations Commander Cadet Luciana Enlohan described school and community goals: campus beautification projects, stadium cleanups, and a Toys for Tots campaign that collected more than 190 toys. The unit also logged community service at events such as Veterans Day volunteer work and a pancake supper.
Cadets outlined leadership and STEM opportunities available through the program: after-school JLab (academic bowl), drone and rocketry projects, flight simulators and model aircraft. "We provide an amazing STEM array that we are able to offer," one cadet said, describing drone building, rocketry and robotics activities that include practical, hands-on experience.
Board members praised the unit’s presentation and offered support for recruiting and retention. Board member Danny Blanton, who identified himself as prior military, thanked the cadets and board for supporting JROTC, saying he and other board members would help with recruitment efforts at middle schools. A board member also noted a pending senior aerospace science instructor hire (Lieutenant Colonel McCafferty) and described that addition as a "huge" potential boost to the unit.
The cadets closed by thanking the board for the opportunity to present and requested feedback. The unit will continue recruiting visits at feeder middle schools, and the board encouraged continued community engagement and quarterly progress reporting to committees as appropriate.
