Racine Unified reports five schools closed to open enrollment, many others at capacity

Racine Unified staff presented the district’s open-enrollment seat determinations for the 2025–26 school year and confirmed that five schools currently have no seats available and are operating with wait lists.
Felicia Howell, the district staff member presenting the determination, said the report follows Department of Public Instruction (DPI) formats and includes details for general open enrollment and special-education open-enrollment availability. She named Goodland, Walden and The Real School among consistently closed-choice schools with long wait lists and said Starbucks and O’Brien also had no available seats.
Howell explained the district uses a lottery and sibling preference when available seats open and that families may be placed on a wait list. She also told the board that, despite recent district internet outages, families were able to complete online open-enrollment applications and that the process was not materially disrupted.
Board members noted the closed status at popular schools reflects efficient use of space but also means the district is turning away potential students. The district will publish the formal determinations and continue to manage wait lists and choice enrollments as spaces become available.
