The Wausau Human Resources Committee on Jan. 13 approved several housekeeping amendments to the employee handbook: codifying a mechanic incentive pay for the water utilities, increasing the cold-weather gear reimbursement, and adding a safety-eyeglass reimbursement provision.
Committee members said the mechanic incentive language had been discussed with HR and would be codified so handbook language matches prior council action. A committee member suggested incorporating the changes into a common council resolution so updates flow immediately into the handbook; HR staff said they would work on codifying the language.
For cold-weather gear, staff explained the existing reimbursement had not been updated for many years and was $50. The proposed change raises the one-time annual reimbursement to $75 to better match current costs; staff noted some bibs and insulated gear can cost $100–$140 while basic items can be obtained nearer to $80–$90.
The new safety-eyeglass reimbursement provision requires purchased safety glasses to meet an ANSI safety standard to be eligible for reimbursement; staff said the reimbursement covers frames and lenses for qualifying safety glasses, which employees may prefer to avoid wearing goggles over prescription eyewear.
Motions to approve the handbook amendments carried unanimously.
