The Clearfield County salary board on Wednesday tabled a courts’ request to approve structured sign‑on bonuses for new probation officers.
The courts asked the board to permit sign‑on bonuses described in the meeting as "$25100 structured sign on bonuses to new probation officers officer hires" and said any paid bonuses would be reimbursed to the county from additional supervision monies. A county official clarified that supervision monies are paid by defendants for probation supervision and are not property tax revenues.
One salary board member asked whether the courts had finalized the proposed bonus structure and said any agreement should spell out repayment if an employee leaves within a year. “If somebody leaves within a year, I think it would be appropriate to withhold the pro rata share of this from their final payment because the whole idea is that they stay at least a year,” the member said.
Because the courts and commissioners had not settled the details of the bonus structure, a motion to table the item until the next salary board meeting carried. Commissioners and court representatives agreed to schedule a follow‑up meeting, including the controller, to resolve outstanding questions before bringing the item back for a vote.
