Commissioners discuss revamping proclamation process and monthly engagement events

County clerks and staff presented a proposal Jan. 14 to revise how Thurston County issues proclamations in 2025, combining routine consent proclamations with monthly, larger engagement events intended to showcase community partners and increase public participation.
The clerk described two tracks: consent proclamations (routine acknowledgements used by organizations) and larger presentations intended once a month or at selected meetings that allow stakeholders to convene, present and engage with commissioners in the atrium. Staff said the goal is to avoid brief ceremonial photo-ops while giving community partners sufficient notice and capacity to attend. The clerk noted lessons learned from 2024 events such as the Quilts of Valor presentation.
Commissioners suggested topics to add or emphasize in the calendar, including a county-centered missing-persons/cold-cases awareness event with law-enforcement updates, mental-health awareness and recovery events, arts-and-culture recognition, and recreation outreach. They asked staff to prepare a preliminary calendar and to begin planning for February’s African American History Month event. The clerk said two proclamations for Jan. 21 (MLK Jr. Day and Law Enforcement Appreciation Day) will be placed on the consent agenda.
