Claiborne County—s interim county administrator told supervisors Jan. 6 that the firm Watkins Ward & Stafford remains behind on county audits for 2020'022 and that the county currently has only an approved audit through 2019 on file.
Interim administrator Wanda Anderson said she has documentation from the auditor showing work completed through portions of 2020 and that the firm reported progress but has not finished the remaining years. She told the board she would reach out to other auditing firms and bring names and written proposals to the next meeting if Watkins Ward & Stafford could not finish in a timely manner.
Supervisors noted that being current on audits affects federal funding eligibility and grant compliance, and they instructed staff to prioritize bringing the county—s audits up to date. The clerk/treasurer confirmed that internal monitoring and coordination with the state—s auditing office would be required to ensure compliance while the county transitions to a new auditor if necessary.
The board voted to direct the interim administrator to obtain proposals for auditing services to complete the outstanding years and to report back with recommendations at the next meeting.
