The Michigan City Redevelopment Commission voted Jan. 13 to provide a $600,000 local match and engineering budget to pursue the 2025 Community Crossings matching grant (CCMG), a state program that funds street paving.
Staff said the state recently increased available CCMG funding and that Michigan City typically receives about $1 million in motor-vehicle funds each year. The $600,000 requested would cover the local match and related engineering costs so the city can capture the full state allocation.
Commissioners and staff described the project-selection process: streets are scored using an engineering assessment tool (PACER) and the city engineering team coordinates scoring and prioritization. Commission members asked for the street list and the PACER scores; staff agreed to provide those to the commission for review.
Commissioner Clarence Hulse and others noted that most candidate streets either lie within or connect to TIF districts, and staff said even streets outside a TIF still typically benefit redevelopment projects. The motion to approve the $600,000 allocation passed unanimously.
Staff listed a follow-up task to deliver the street list and PACER scoring results to the commission; commissioners said the public may submit streets for consideration by contacting city hall.
