Sparks proclaims January 2025 Human Trafficking Prevention Month; local nonprofit outlines prevention work

The Sparks City Council on Jan. 13 proclaimed January 2025 Human Trafficking Prevention Month, with Councilman Rodriguez reading the proclamation into the record and recognizing the Nevada Human Trafficking Prevention Alliance’s local work.
Janet Lombardo, representing the Human Trafficking Prevention Alliance, told the council the group formed about two years ago as an unfunded nonprofit and focuses on youth prevention and caregiver education. “When one person is trafficked, it affects everyone,” Lombardo said, stressing prevention and survivor support.
Lombardo described programs ranging from kindergarten-through-12th-grade curriculum delivery, online parent and caregiver internet-safety classes, a homeschool program, and a July fundraising golf tournament. She said the group recently became an education partner with the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children and is pursuing school-based presentations in partnership with the HEAT team and district staff.
Council members thanked the group and asked for information about upcoming events and how the council could amplify awareness. The proclamation names htp-prevention.org as a resource and calls for community coordination to strengthen protective factors, the text said.
