Holiday surge strained Hayden-area airport operations; county reports EV-charger install due by month’s end

Routt County officials said a holiday disruption required large-scale transportation and lodging support at Hayden-area facilities and reported progress and delays on electric-vehicle infrastructure at the airport.

County staff recounted that nearly 500 people needed transportation and hotel rooms after flight disruptions; Ski Town Transportation provided shuttle service to Craig and county officials said they reserved 129 rooms for affected travelers. County staff said the county’s own bus was ready with a chase truck for baggage but ultimately was not required.

On winter operations, county staff said county plows and scoria application (Yellow Jacket) had been active and that some roads were slushy during travel; staff praised road-and-bridge crews for their work and noted CDOT-plowed areas near the airport also appeared heavily sanded.

On electric-vehicle infrastructure at the Hayden airport, county staff and commissioners discussed an EV-readiness tool the county is developing for fleet decision-making and an airport charger project. County staff said conduit and some site infrastructure have been installed but that the local electrical contractor was awaiting final supplies. A county official reported: “Central Electric is waiting to receive some of their last needed supplies. They’ll order some wires and other stuff, and they expect to have the parts and complete the install before the end of the month.”

County participants said ChargePoint has a local vendor relationship that affects installation scheduling and that electrician availability in the county contributes to delay. Commissioners noted that airport operations and safety remain the priority during busy holiday periods.
