PUEBLO, Colo. — Dan Nielsen of Pueblo West used public comment at the Pueblo County Board of County Commissioners meeting on Jan. 14 to praise the county clerk for finding a new ballot printer that, he said, reduced printing costs and produced large savings for the county.
Nielsen, who spoke during the meeting’s public-comment period, described the numbers he presented as “representative figures” rather than precise accounting. He said previous ballot printing cost “about $8 and change” per ballot and that a new printer reduced that cost to “$2 and change.” Using those representative numbers and his estimate of roughly 118,000 ballots mailed in the general election, Nielsen calculated a savings of about $708,000.
Nielsen told the board that over three previous elections the county had paid for many printed but unreturned ballots and that the reduction in per-ballot cost was a “very significant amount.” He also praised the county clerk’s office, saying county-clerk employees “love her” and “think she is a great boss.”
The remarks were offered as public comment; the county clerk’s office did not present verified figures during the meeting. Nielsen did not identify the clerk by name in the recorded remarks. The board did not take action on the numbers during the meeting.
