Landfill reports 22% year-over-year volume increase; winter operations slowing construction

Landfill managers told the Chaffee County meeting that winter weather has slowed construction at the county landfill but that the facility saw significant volume increases in 2024.
Managers said the department is “basically just stockpiling dirt” for a new cell while equipment and ground remain frozen, and that site work and scale installation are expected to resume in the next month as temperatures rise.
County staff provided two written reports at the meeting: a December 2024 monthly report and a fourth-quarter 2024 quarterly report. The reports show a 22% increase in tonnage over 2023 for key categories — with the largest increases attributed to compacted trash, construction debris and material from the brush yard. Staff also reported a roughly 5% increase in the total number of customers served at the landfill in 2024 compared with 2023.
Staff said mulch sales ran higher in recent months and the facility moved a large amount of mulch heading into the new year. No agenda action was required on the presentation.
The landfill update was brief and staff invited questions from the commissioners; none were raised that changed the operational timeline described.
