Carmel leaders renew commitment to Martin Luther King Jr. principles at 2025 commemoration

He said the commission also "serve[s] as a platform for community members to informally address and discuss issues involving potential prejudice, intolerance, or bigotry that may adversely affect public welfare." These remarks opened the commission's formal presentation at the commemoration.
Mayor Sue Finkham, in her second year as mayor, said the day is both a remembrance and a call to action. "I am committed to upholding Dr. King's principles in our city and encourage us all to strive for a more just and inclusive community," Finkham said. Her remarks framed the event as civic reflection and a prompt for local efforts to advance equity.
A representative of Carmel Sister Cities framed international exchange as complementary to local work on justice and mutual understanding. "Carmel's sister cities is dedicated to fostering global cooperation, understanding, and peace through citizen-to-citizen diplomacy," the speaker said, linking the group's outreach to the commemoration's themes of unity and human dignity.
Organizers opened the program with the presentation of colors by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 10003 and included musical and dramatic performances reflecting King-era history and civil-rights themes.
