Downtown update: EV charger permits issued, Masala grocery opens, Carnival planned for March

Nate Mack, Downtown Development Authority director, reported that permits for five electric vehicle charging locations have been issued and installation work will begin soon.
Mack listed the planned locations: the Whipple Street parking lot (across from the police station), the Wells Street parking lot behind Duovino, 390 South Lafayette (the Lafayette Park site), and two locations in Maccatti Park (one by the freight house and another in the park parking lot), pending power availability.
Mack also noted that Masala Indian Kitchen and Grocery opened at 588 North Lafayette Street in the strip with the Salvation Army and described it as a new grocery and restaurant option. The DDA Promotions Committee has been planning the downtown Carnival for Saturday, March 8, from about 2 to 5 p.m.; planned attractions include a photo booth, live music, street performers, a mask‑making station, sidewalk chalk and a costume contest or parade.
Mack said the DDA board approved its strategic plan and will meet jointly with the planning commission on Jan. 23 to align development goals. He said the Lafayette Park project (390 South Lafayette) has received more than $400,000 in grant funding and staff expect to bid that phased park project soon.
Councilmembers asked for charger locations and vendor counts for recent indoor markets; Mack said signage was improved and estimated about 25 vendors at the recent market.
