Sterling Heights — City staff announced plans for a Martin Luther King Jr. Unity Walk on Monday, Jan. 20, and said a citywide resident survey is scheduled for 2025 with results to be reported to council in the fall.
Community relations director Melanie Davis said the Unity Walk will begin at 10 a.m. at city hall, proceed down Dodge Park to 17 Mile Road and return to city hall for a guest speaker and performances. Davis said Dr. Tariq Cummings, administrative pastor of Second Ebenezer Church, will be the guest speaker and that the event is hosted by the Sterling Heights Ethnic Community Committee with support from the Sterling Heights African American Coalition. She said registration is available online and by phone and that the event will include complimentary refreshments.
Davis also outlined library holiday programming: a teen community-service poster project on Thursday, Jan. 16, take-home crafts available Jan. 16–19, and a library collection of more than 150 MLK-related titles for youth and adults.
Davis and City Manager Mark Vanderpool said the city will run a statistically significant community survey in summer 2025, following past surveys in 2017 and 2021. Results are expected to be tabulated in August with a contracted firm presenting findings to council in early fall. The survey will measure resident satisfaction with city services and include a few key policy questions that help the city benchmark performance over time.
