Summary

St. Louis Public Schools officials briefed the board on Jan. 13 on a new online open-registration process that will require all families — returning and new — to register for the 2025–26 school year beginning Jan. 21. The district said families must now opt in for transportation and designate before‑ and after‑care needs earlier than in prior years.
“Historically, pre-K through 11th grade are rolled over in our student information system,” said Mr. Mitchell, a district communications presenter. “This year, we're asking all of our families, whether they are current or prospective, to register beginning Jan. 21.” The district said the change is intended to reduce inefficiencies created when students who no longer ride buses are retained on routes, producing “ghost stops.”
Registration will be available at www.slps.org/register, the presenters said, and the district is running a communications campaign including television, digital ads, local newspaper placements, billboards and targeted robocalls to families. The district has set up three school-based support sites (Hickey, Oak Hill and New American Academy) with scheduled hours for in-person help, and central office assistance will be available during business hours for families who need help.
Family support specialists and school staff will also perform outreach and one-on-one help for families who do not complete registration during the priority window. The district said families who register after the priority window (after March 8) will still be able to receive transportation, but their requests may not be routed with priority and could require up to a seven-day turnaround for service to begin.
Board members asked several operational questions about capacity for aftercare and band programs. Officials said that existing before/after-care arrangements remain in place (including YMCA-run programs where applicable) and the online selection simply helps the district plan staffing and space.
Ending: The district said the registration web page is live for information and that full online enrollment opens Jan. 21; staff will continue outreach and provide in-person support for families who need help completing the forms.
