Advisory board hears 2025 Parks, Recreation and Culture master plan; votes to defer recommendation to February

Consultants for the City of Lawrence presented a draft 2025 Parks, Recreation and Culture comprehensive master plan to the Parks, Recreation and Culture Advisory Board and asked the board to recommend the plan to the City Commission. After questions about trails, programming, accessibility and funding, the board voted to defer making a formal recommendation until its February meeting so members and the Cultural Arts Commission could review proposed changes.
The plan, developed by Confluence with PROS Consulting and Designing Local, updates a 2017 master plan and draws on an 18–19 month outreach process that included an inventory of parks and facilities, public open houses, a statistically valid survey and an interactive Social Pinpoint web tool. Leon Younger of PROS Consulting said the plan found Lawrence is “much better served than I think a lot of people realize, from the standpoint of overall parks and trails within the community,” while also identifying geographic gaps and maintenance needs.
