FBLA students present to board, detail community service and scholarship successes

Members of the Canyon City High School chapter of Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) gave a presentation to the board on Jan. 13 describing community service activities, competitive opportunities and scholarship outcomes.
Ben Newman, the chapter adviser at Canyon City High School, introduced an officer team that described recent service efforts—bell ringing for the Salvation Army, a clothing drive for Loaves and Fishes and a pet supply drive for the Humane Society—and explained how FBLA competitions and chapter programs build leadership and workplace skills. Lily, the FBLA chapter president and a senior, told the board the chapter had accumulated 310 PEAK points and said, “I have a total of $150,000 in scholarships from FBLA,” which she described as material support for college and career plans.
Students also described district and national competitive experiences, job and mentorship connections they gained through FBLA, and chapter efforts to increase membership participation in district and national competitions. Board members and the superintendent complimented the students’ communication skills and community engagement.
Why it matters: The presentation highlights a district extracurricular program that students say produces measurable scholarship and career benefits and engages with local nonprofits. Several officers told the board that FBLA opportunities led to job leads and national competition experiences.
