The Canyon City Schools Board of Education on Jan. 13 approved an out-of-state travel request for the Canyon City High School JROTC rifle team to attend the service championships in Sandy, Utah. The team qualified at a national ranking and will travel for matches scheduled Feb. 6–8, with travel and lodging arrangements described in the JROTC memo.
Instructor Sir First Class Grimshaw (retired) told the board the team’s national placement qualified them for the championships and that the Army would pay the bulk of lodging and food costs. He said the unit would rent two four-wheel-drive SUVs—one provided by the Army for the instructor and one rented using JROTC funds for a chaperone—because of the equipment and rifles the team transports. Grimshaw also noted he would carry chains and other contingencies for winter travel.
The board approved the travel request by motion and roll-call vote and requested a report back after the competition.
Why it matters: Board approval enables students to compete at a national-level event and obligates the district to authorize the travel; the meeting record notes a request that the team report back after the event.
