Board adopts 202526#8211;26 school calendar with fewer teacher workdays and aligned breaks

The Orange County Board of Education on Jan. 13 approved the district’s proposed 202526#8211;26 school calendar following a presentation from Dr. Mark Pack and the calendar committee. The approved calendar sets 176 instructional days, 18 teacher workdays, 11 holidays and 10 annual leave days out of a 215-day teacher contract.
Dr. Pack said the committee prioritized balance among certified staff, classified staff, students and families and sought alignment between traditional and year-round schedules. He described specific features: a full Thanksgiving week (composed of two teacher workdays, one annual leave day and two holidays on the traditional calendar), a two-week winter break for students, removal of a three-hour early-release day for professional development, and alignment of nine workdays between traditional and year-round calendars.
The year-round option for Hillsborough Elementary begins student instruction July 16, 2025, and the calendars end on the same date in June (June 10, 2026). Dr. Pack said the calendar committee will reconvene at the end of January to designate which workdays will be required for districtwide professional duties and which will be optional leave days.
Board members expressed appreciation for how the committee solicited staff input and for the calendar’s treatment of Thanksgiving and other breaks. The board converted the item to an action item during the meeting and approved the calendar by voice vote.
