Board awards sewer and water design contracts, approves change order and final payments for South 6th Street projects

The Board approved multiple water and sewer capital actions on Jan. 14: it awarded design work for the 2025 sanitary sewer rehabilitation project to RA Smith (not to exceed $14,000), awarded design for three bundled water-main projects to RA Smith (not to exceed $53,200), approved change order No. 1 for the South 6th Street sanitary relay project to Globe Contractors Inc. ($38,755), approved final payment for the South 6th Street sanitary relay to Globe Contractors ($58,341.50), approved final payment for the South 6th Street water relay ($6,226), and awarded the Aubanshine Park water extension project to Decay Contractors ($290,965).
Public Works staff said the sanitary rehabilitation project will focus on manholes in Abenchyne Park where recent cleaning found uncovered rebar and on an MIS connection at 27th and Minnesota. The project budget was noted as approximately $250,000; construction cost estimates for the bundled water projects were roughly $1 million, and staff said bundling produced design savings of about $7,400.
On change order No. 1 for the South 6th Street sanitary relay, staff explained that nearby trenching and construction vibration caused multiple water-main breaks and a failed saddle on an older main; the contractor excavated, provided traffic control and performed pavement restoration, which was the largest portion of the change order.
Public Works staff said all work on the South 6th projects is complete and that the department is satisfied with contractor performance. The Aubanshine Park extension will loop supply from Drexel Avenue to the Stonebrook development and provide service to a park pavilion; staff said the project received seven bids and the low bidder was awarded.
Board members moved and approved each item by roll call during the meeting. Several items were described as continuation projects from prior CIP cycles and as within budgeted amounts.
