During its Jan. 14, 2025 meeting the Southgate Community School District Board of Education elected new officers, approved the consent agenda and named members to standing committees as part of annual organizational business.
The board approved a slate of officers as presented in a motion: Jason Craig was approved as board president, Andrew Green as vice president, Darlene Pomponeo as secretary and Jason Koopser (recorded as treasurer in the motion) as treasurer. The motion to approve the elected officers was made by Hector Pomponeo and supported by Mr. Sage; the board voted to adopt the motion.
The consent agenda was approved and the items listed in the meeting included minutes from the Dec. 17, 2024 regular meeting; an EHR update; disbursements dated Dec. 20, 2024; an expulsion action for a Davidson Middle School student (case reference provided in the agenda); designation of banking and investment firms (Huntington Bank, Michigan Liquid Asset Fund, Fifth Third Securities listed in the agenda), designation of the News Herald as official newspaper, designation of legal counsel firms named on the agenda, and designation of an auditor and district officials authorized to post notices and conduct transactions. The consent agenda passed on a motion by a board member with support; no individual vote counts were read into the record.
The board also conducted annual organizational business on committee assignments and compensation. The policy committee appointments approved were Dr. Pomponio, Angie Angel and Andrew Green. The finance committee appointments approved were Mr. Freitas, Mr. Coopster and Mr. Sage. Board members discussed the professional development line for board members and staff said the standing allocation is $1,000 per member for training and professional memberships.
Why it matters: Annual officer elections and committee assignments determine board leadership and committee composition for the coming year and authorize officials to act on routine financial and administrative matters.
What the board did: The board adopted the organizational slate, approved the consent agenda and confirmed committee membership and the standing professional development allocation.
Looking ahead: The board will proceed with committee work under the new assignments and the superintendent and director of business/finance will continue to post notices and manage transactional responsibilities as designated on the consent agenda.
