Board members of Lakeville Area School District 194 reviewed and discussed committee, advisory council and liaison assignments during the Jan. 14 meeting, agreeing to continue the topic and formalize appointments at a later date.
Chair Matt Swanson asked directors to indicate which advisory councils and community liaison roles they would serve. Several directors signaled interest in specific councils: Director Kim Baker volunteered for the 917 board representative role and the special education advisory council; Director Amber Cameron said she would continue on the public engagement committee; Director Carly Anderson expressed interest in wellness and teaching-and-learning advisory work.
Superintendent Michael Baumann clarified statutory requirements for certain advisory roles, telling the board that "for the highest level of accuracy" special education and community education are the required advisory councils, while teaching-and-learning duties are traditionally treated as district practice. Directors discussed three categories of committees: (1) board standing committees (policy, HR/negotiations, finance/facilities, academics, public engagement), (2) required and optional advisory councils (special education, community education, TLAC), and (3) outside liaisons (e.g., joint powers boards and community organizations).
Directors suggested limiting the number of appointments per director and spreading assignments to cover required representation. Director Brian Thompson recommended thinking in terms of three "buckets"—board committees, advisory councils and liaisons—and asked administration to provide a complete list so the board can return with formal resolutions establishing committees and appointing members.
No formal votes were taken; the board agreed to continue the appointments process at a future meeting and to prepare formal resolutions defining committee charges and membership.
