Superintendent outlines standards-of-excellence work, upcoming surveys and MLK Day service projects

The superintendent told the Flossmoor SD 161 Board of Education on Jan. 13 that the district is working with Studer Education on three priorities: developing standards of excellence, launching experience surveys for students, parents and staff, and creating a district 161 scorecard that the board and community can use to track progress across academic and other indicators.
Kathy Miles from Studer Education met with cabinet-level administrators and the administrative team the same day, and the superintendent said Miles will return in March for further work. The superintendent said staff will share initial information with the board and stakeholders in the interim and solicit feedback.
The superintendent highlighted upcoming dates: the Parker PTO meeting on Jan. 14; a board retreat with an Illinois Association of School Boards representative on Jan. 15 to begin goal development; and a Parker Junior High orchestra concert on Jan. 16 at 6:30 p.m.
He also described the district’s planned MLK Day of Service projects for the following week, which will include:
- Flossmoor Hills: making cards for retirement communities, 9 a.m.–11 a.m.; - Heather Hill: You Matter 2 project making lunches and blankets, 10 a.m.–noon; - Serena Hills: making Valentine’s Day cards for senior citizens and homebound individuals, 9 a.m.–10:30 a.m.; - Western Avenue: hosting Jack and Jill’s Monarch Cities chapter, collecting food and hygiene products, 11 a.m.–2 p.m.; - Parker Junior High School: collecting personal-care products, 9 a.m.–11:30 a.m., to support Anew.
The superintendent said the district wants repeatable processes that support consistent student outcomes and that experience surveys will help identify targets for improvement. He closed by saying the standards work had been productive.
