Rockland School Committee recognizes coach of the year and undefeated cheer squad

The Rockland School Committee opened its Jan. 13 meeting with recognitions of recent athletic achievements.
The committee recognized Diana Newcomb, Rockland High School girls basketball head coach, who was named the 2023–24 coach of the year by the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association (MIAA). Newcomb has been head varsity coach for 13 years; the committee noted multiple league titles and several Final Four appearances under her leadership and said she received a plaque at an awards banquet on Dec. 11.
Committee members also introduced and recognized the 2024 Rockland High School cheerleading team and coach Janine Reardon. The committee noted the squad finished the fall 2024 season undefeated, won the South Shore League, captured the Division 4 South Regional title and were MSAA Division 4 state champions. The meeting included appearances by team captains: senior Lucy Burns, senior Rachel Lehi and junior Ashley Moran.
Speakers thanked the coaches and students for their work; remarks were celebratory and focused on accomplishments. The committee also offered brief staff and community acknowledgements for recent retirements (notably Peter Parks) and other community contributions.
