Council appoints resident Steve Henderson to Charlotte Water interbasin stakeholder advisory group

Kershaw County Council on Jan. 14 appointed resident Steve Henderson to the Charlotte Water Interbasin Transfer Stakeholders Advisory Group after Henderson offered to act as a county representative.
Henderson told the council he lives on Beavercreek and has followed lake-water quality concerns for decades; he said Charlotte Water currently holds a permit to withdraw 33 million gallons per day and transfer water into the Yadkin–Pee Dee River Basin. Henderson said he already serves on the stakeholder advisory group and offered to also represent Kershaw County at no cost to the county.
Councilman Bridal moved to appoint Henderson; Councilman Shumate seconded. Council members thanked Henderson and recorded the vote as unanimous among those present.
Why it matters: the interbasin transfer discussions affect Lake Wateree and downstream water quality and flow; having a county representative in the stakeholder process ensures local interests and lake-users’ perspectives are raised during alternatives and mitigation planning.
