Middle school construction in Rockcastle County moves forward; district describes controlled blasting, retaining-wall work

A staff member for Rockcastle County Schools told the board that construction at the new middle school is continuing, with controlled blasting, foundation and retaining-wall work underway and further traffic coordination planned as the project moves toward completion.

The update, given during the school board meeting, said most blasting has been scheduled after school hours and crews used a one-minute horn signal before detonation. The presenter said crews place signage around the school and prohibit two-way radios during blasting; they make final connections during the horn and disconnect immediately afterward to avoid accidental discharge.

The staff member said crews expected to have “shot their last area today” and would re-check the site the following day to confirm no additional blasting was required. Work continues on footings at the football field and on retaining walls; the presenter said a large section of retaining wall was scheduled to be poured late Thursday, weather permitting. The update also noted underslab work at the mezzanine and mechanical rough-in behind the former stage area.

The presenter told the board the district plans to coordinate a change in traffic patterns with the school in the next two to three weeks as sections of the site open. No board action on construction contracting or emergency measures was recorded in the meeting transcript.
