JC Wolf, a domestic violence social worker at the North Suburban Legal Aid Clinic, briefed the Highland Park City Council on Jan. 13 about teen dating violence and local resources as part of February’s Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month.
Wolf defined teen dating violence as patterns of controlling or abusive behaviors — physical, verbal, emotional and sexual — that jeopardize a teen’s safety and future ability to form healthy relationships. Common signs listed included rapid intensity in a relationship, control or jealousy, sudden behavior changes, isolation from friends and family, constant monitoring through communications or location apps, and fear about a partner's reaction.
"At the North Suburban Legal Aid Clinic, we are here to help," Wolf said, outlining that the clinic offers confidential legal assistance, advocacy and social work support and partners with social service agencies and public safety officials. Wolf encouraged teens, parents and educators to use online resources and contact the clinic for assistance.
The presentation emphasized education about trust, boundaries and consent as prevention tools and directed listeners to the clinic’s website and phone contacts for help. No council action was taken; the presentation was informational.
