St. Bernard Parish spotlights teachers of the year; parish winners enter state competition

"This is good that we're presenting this tonight because our three district teachers of the year are right now as we speak submitting and entering all of their information into the State Department of Education's portal," Feld said during the committee meeting.
Why it matters: The board said the spotlighting is timed to support teachers advancing to state competition and to show the district’s ongoing emphasis on classroom dedication and community ties.
Board members praised the teachers. Several speakers emphasized that many honorees are St. Bernard natives who returned to teach in the parish. Jack Jackson, who produced video interviews for the segment, said the short clips were edited down from longer interviews to fit the program but reflected strong answers from the teachers.
Meeting material shown to the committee highlighted recurring themes from the teacher interviews: sustained dedication to students, relationship-building outside formal instruction, and efforts to raise test scores and classroom engagement. The segment included teachers describing activities such as Beta Club bake sales that pair general-education students with special-education peers and after-school clubs intended to strengthen student connections.
The board said the formal communications update will be presented at the next regular meeting, and that the teachers advancing to state-level competition had submitted required paperwork to the state portal at the time of the committee meeting. The committee did not list the parish winners' names on the committee agenda; board members said those teachers will be formally recognized again at an upcoming full meeting.
Board members closed the segment by thanking the teachers and wishing the parish winners success at the state level.
