Council hears update on Place of Remembrance survey; staff proposes July 3–4 schedule for remembrance and festivities

City staff updated the Highland Park City Council on Jan. 13 about the search for a permanent Place of Remembrance and plans for Independence Day 2025, asking council concurrence on the proposed schedule and outreach steps.
Staff said the temporary Place of Remembrance will remain in the rose garden until a permanent site is selected and that the public location survey remains open through Jan. 31. The Place of Remembrance working group will meet the following evening to review preliminary input; staff said it will later return recommendations to the working group and then to council for final determination.
On Independence Day planning, staff recommended a joint schedule with the Park District: hold the remembrance at Edgewood Middle School on July 4 beginning at about 9:30 a.m. (RSVP requested to estimate attendance) and coordinate a parade at noon. The Park District proposes a July 3 evening festival at The Preserve, 1200 Park Avenue West, running approximately 5:30–8:30 p.m. Staff noted a drone-show contractor recommends performances not earlier than 9:30 p.m., so staff proposed staging the drone show on a different night or coordinating timing with Park District entertainment.
Council members voiced concurrence with the proposed schedule and agreed to discuss drone vs. fireworks timing at a future Committee of the Whole meeting if needed. Staff reiterated that crisis assistance remains available via 988 and the city website.
No formal council action was taken; staff sought concurrence and next steps for outreach, survey completion and coordination with School District 112 and the Park District.
