City manager updates: winter shelters, engineer retirement and council vacancy; three commission appointees recognized

City Manager Jurgens updated the council and public on winter weather operations, homelessness supports and administrative matters at the Jan. 13 meeting. Jurgens reminded residents that city offices will be closed on Monday, Jan. 20 for Martin Luther King Day and that the Committee of the Whole meeting will move to Tuesday, Jan. 21.
In response to very cold weather, Jurgens said staff are coordinating with local service providers and nonprofits. He highlighted expanded capacity at the Salvation Army, Home Sweet Home accommodations and warming shelters maintained by the county; the city will share shelter locations on social media. Jurgens also announced the planned retirement of City Engineer Kevin Cote after more than 37 years of service and thanked him for his institutional knowledge.
The council recognized three appointments: Amber Collins to the Cultural Commission, Rachel Mosley to the Property Maintenance Review Board and Brandon Wheeler to the Technology Commission. Those appointments were included in the consent agenda, which council approved earlier in the meeting.
Jurgens also reported that Council member Bolin had resigned; staff extended the application deadline for council replacement to the coming Friday and said they will review applications before filling the vacancy.
