Board members discussed obtaining a second quote for comparison and asked administration to proceed with the vendor that provided the best balance of quality and price; one board member suggested that if a second quote returned substantially higher, administrators should be authorized to move forward with the current quote to avoid scheduling delays.
For the elementary gym, the estimate presented was approximately $30,000 to take the gym floor down to base and redo it. Board members noted the higher-than-anticipated price compared with prior budget estimates and discussed the value of the work given projected longevity (several board members estimated the work could extend the life of the floor by about 10 years). One administrator noted the vendor’s schedule fills quickly and that the work would need to be contracted soon to secure summer installation when school is out.
Board members asked staff to obtain at least one additional comparable quote for both projects, to check warranties and expected useful lives for the signage and gym work, and to return to the board with that information. The board did not vote to award contracts at the Jan. 14 meeting; members discussed delegating authority to administration to proceed only if comparative pricing and warranty terms justified immediate action.
