Fire department reports higher call volume, seeks approval for annual hose-and-ladder testing

Morgan Township’s fire department reported a rise in calls for service last year and asked trustees for authority to contract for annual hose and ladder testing.
In a Jan. 13 update, the department reported 511 runs for the year, later clarified in the meeting to 510 runs with one false alarm — a 14% overall increase in calls year over year. The department recorded 244 transports, an 8% increase from 225 the previous year. The speaker said the department inspected 56 of 57 township businesses (one remained noncompliant and will be re-inspected) and installed 34 smoke detectors during the year. The department offered two community CPR classes in the year; the next scheduled class is Monday, Feb. 10 at 7 p.m., and the department said the class includes certification cards.
The department reported $113,649 in grant funding received last year, including a $50,000 award listed as the Marks grant and other first-responder and EMS grants.
The department requested permission to enter into a contract with National Hose Testing Great Lakes Division for annual hose and ladder testing. The presenter said the township cannot specify a contract amount until testing is complete because costs depend on the number of feet of hose tested; trustees voted to grant permission to enter the contract.
The presenter also reported completing the annual review of motor vehicle records required by the township’s insurance carrier and found no areas of concern for the prior year.
The department’s report was delivered with no extended debate; trustees moved and approved the requested permission for the hose-and-ladder testing contract.
