Talbot County council creates Talbot 250 commission to coordinate 2026 bicentennial events

The commission will gather local organizations and stakeholders to organize and promote Talbot County activities for the 250th anniversary of American independence, the resolution says. The council said the commission will provide quarterly reports at regular council meetings and a final report within three months after the final event, after which the commission will be disbanded.
Sarah Killman, Talbot County communications coordinator and public information officer, told the council the commission’s goal is to coordinate activities while avoiding duplicate efforts by local organizations. “We have intentionally kept it a little lofty because I would like to work with the commission to ask them what they would like to see done,” Killman said, and noted a county website, talbot250.org, is live with initial content and will host commission information once members are appointed.
Council members said the county museum and other local partners have already expressed interest in participating. The resolution’s revised draft, introduced by Council member Thomas, included language to allow flexibility in membership to be inclusive of local groups.
The council approved the resolution by voice vote: Council President Callahan and Council members Stepp, Lesher, Milkey and Hayes voted aye.
The council did not specify membership names in the resolution at the meeting; the communications office announced a public meeting next week to solicit interest and begin forming the commission.
The commission is explicitly charged with coordinating local Talbot 250 events and preparing reports to the council; the resolution does not specify a budget or staff assignments beyond the regular county communications support.
