Parks department hiring push, pool-party bookings and winter programs update

Parks Director John Messenger told the Board of Works on Jan. 13 that the parks department is recruiting for two full-time maintenance positions and expects to complete hiring by March as operations ramp up for spring.
Messenger said the department had received about nine applications so far and will begin interviews Tuesday of next week. The department will host open interviews for summer positions (lifeguards and concessions) at Seashore Water Park on Wednesday, Jan. 15, and again on Saturday, Feb. 1 for applicants who cannot attend the first session; applicants must be at least 15 years old and should bring completed applications. Messenger said the pool-party calendar is roughly 50% full and pricing for parties remains unchanged from last year.
Winter maintenance included snow clearing at downtown parks, the Big Four and the dog park, and Messenger said Christmas lights will remain on for a while longer because decorations are brittle and removing them prematurely risks damage. The parks department is running a snowman contest with photo submissions accepted through Feb. 14. Messenger also mentioned ongoing training for maintenance staff and that hiring paperwork support is being provided by the clerk’s office for on-the-spot hires.
Messenger briefly listed completed or upcoming park projects and maintenance work but deferred larger capital items to engineering sections of the agenda.
