Mason County urges continued funding for SR‑3 freight corridor, warns connectors needed to avoid cutting off housing

Deborah Munguia, representing Mason County, told the Senate Transportation Committee on Jan. 14 that Governor Inslee’s budget maintains funding and schedule for the State Route 3 Freight Corridor, which she said is Mason County’s top transportation priority.
Munguia said the environmental assessment for the freight corridor is complete and that the Federal Highway Administration issued a Finding of No Significant Impact in November 2024. She said right-of-way acquisition and construction preparation are underway. The county also urged that two connector projects—Romance Hill connector and the Log Yard Road connector—remain in the budget; Munguia said without those connectors an estimated 350 and 650 housing units respectively could be left without access.
Mason County asked the committee to preserve the corridor’s funding and to consider schedule adjustments if needed, so that new and existing housing will retain safe access as corridor construction proceeds. Her testimony was entered into the hearing record; no vote was taken during the committee session.
