Planning commission clears event venue and retail permits, council approves special event request

The city’s Planning and Zoning Commission reported approvals of several commercial and special-use requests at the council meeting.
Debbie Rogers, president of the planning commission, said the panel approved a special-use request to reopen a metal building at 1013 Charles Avenue as a small event venue for gatherings such as birthday parties and receptions. The commission also approved tenant permits for a Dollar General Market at 2017 East Madison Avenue (adjacent to the former Fred’s/Harbor Freight site) and for a boutique at 653 East Madison Avenue in the Magnolia Shopping Center.
Separately, the City Council approved a special-event permit for the Northeast Louisiana chapter’s planned fundraising event on Feb. 7 at the municipal center; organizers provided liquor licensing and insurance documentation and told the council that city police would provide security.
Rogers said the planning commission’s action on the special use was unanimous and that the venue would not operate late-night events, per the applicant’s representation. The council accepted the commission’s report and approved the event permit by voice vote.
