Several councilors said any increased municipal contribution should be contingent on assurances that the funding would support local hours and services at Paul Smith rather than be absorbed into system-wide budgets.
Officials noted practical consequences of changes in affiliation: if Paul Smith left the county system and became independent, the library could lose roughly $80,000 in combined state and county funding and would forfeit interlibrary loan and shared catalog services, which would affect patrons who rely on county-wide resource sharing.
Council agreed to pursue contact with county officials and to publicize any upcoming meetings to give residents an opportunity to comment.
