Planning Commission approves rezoning of 10.9 acres for Holy Cross Cemetery donation

The Loudon County Planning Commission approved a rezoning request for a 10.9-acre parcel on North Shore Drive from A-2 (Rural Residential) to CFD to allow development of a cemetery to be called Holy Cross Cemetery.
Sean Smith, who identified himself as chancellor for the Diocese of Knoxville, said the Seppman family wants to donate the parcel so the diocese can establish a cemetery in West Loudon County. Smith told the commission the site previously operated as a nursery and contains a small building the group plans to use for reception space after services.
A speaker who said he was familiar with the property supported the motion. The applicant’s representative described plans for parking and a peaceful cemetery layout and said the site would not be limited to Catholics. The commission voted in favor of the rezoning motion by voice vote; a planning record shows the motion carried with members indicating “aye.”
The rezoning recommendation advances to the County Commission for final action; planning staff said additional site-plan detail will be required before any development occurs.
