Terra Nova student urges district to bolster school gardens, implement Policy 3510

Ava Litz, a junior at Terra Nova High School and president of the youth climate policy program, used public comment at the Jefferson Union High School District board meeting to urge stronger district support for school gardens and environmental clubs.
"I'm here today to discuss the need for more support and resources to enhance the impact of environmental initiatives at our district," Litz said, identifying herself and her role and urging the board to strengthen implementation of Policy 3510, Green School Operation.
Litz told trustees she attended a Jefferson Union Sustainability Committee meeting and said school gardens and environmental clubs offer hands-on learning that builds environmental literacy and community. She proposed creating a Jefferson Union High School District School Garden and Environmental Club Guidebook tailored to high school students and local microclimates, to help schools secure sustainability grants, connect with local organizations and provide resources for adult and student leaders.
Board President Gallegos thanked Litz; no board action was taken during the public comment period. Litz said she plans to present the guidebook idea to the Jefferson Union Sustainability Committee as a next step.
