Newtown CRA reports strong results from Homefront beautification round 2

Why it matters: The program invests CRA funds to improve residential facades and public perception along target corridors, and visual results can increase community participation in future rounds.
Wayne, a City of Sarasota staff member, said the packet includes before-and-after photos for nine homes; one planned home was delayed after hurricane damage and the purchase order was held open so the painter can return once repairs are complete. Wayne said round two used roughly $45,000 of the program’s $100,000 budget, leaving funds available for additional homes and another solicitation planned in January.
Board members asked whether facade improvements beyond painting — such as light fixtures or landscaping — could be included. Staff said the grants workshop scheduled for Feb. 4 will include opportunity to discuss program edits and eligibility. "Round 2 will have used about 45,000 of your budget," Wayne said.
Staff said interest has increased after painters displayed signs at homes while work was in progress and that the program continues to receive community recognition. No change to the program budget was made at the Jan. 9 meeting.
